History


Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS), founded in 1987, is a private university dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in international studies, particularly in the areas of foreign languages, intercultural communication, Japanese culture, linguistics, and international studies. In 2003 it was awarded the "Good Practice Award" for innovation in education by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology. There are four departments on campus:English, Asian Languages (Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai), Spanish and Portuguese, and International Communication. The university also has a Graduate School Program and a Japanese Language and Culture Program for foreign students. About 3700 students are enrolled in the various courses.

    Establishment of the Department of International Communication and the Department of International Languages
    Establishment of the Center for Language Sciences

    Completion of the SACLA education facility (Self-Access, Communication, Learner Autonomy)
    The ‘New English Language Autonomous Learning Support System’ introduced as part of the 2003 Ministry of Education’s ‘Support Program for Distinctive University Education’.
    Receive comprehensive ‘accreditation’ from the Japan Institution for Higher Education Evaluation (foundation)

  8. 2006

    Completion of ‘Building 7’ education facility

  9. 2007

    Establishment of the International Issues Research Institute (currently the Global Communication Research Institute)

  10. 2008

    The ‘Chiba regional consortium for liberal arts for the purpose of universal communication’ initiative by four Chiba universities (Kanda University of International Studies, Chiba University, Keiai University and Josai International University is adopted by the Ministry of Education’s ‘Support Project for Strategic University Collaborations’.

  11. 2009

    The Career Education Center’s ‘Creation of a student portfolio ICT management for career support’ was adopted by the Ministry of Education’s 2009 ‘Program for Promoting University Education and Student Support’ (Program for Promoting Student Support).
    Establishment of the Center for Teaching English to Children

  12. 2012

    Reorganized into four departments— English, Asian Languages, Spanish and Portuguese, and International Communication.
    Adopted into the Ministry of Education’s 2012 ‘Project for Promotion of Human Resource Development’
